Due to an increase in the number of museum visitors, we have renovated the museum shop, which had been underground, and relocated it to inside the exhibition room on the first floor. Since the relocated place is the final room for the exhibition, we positioned the new shop as the “last exhibition room”, aiming for a space where visitors can relax their sensibility and appreciate their experience after the viewing of the exhibition. While keeping the powerfully spacious impression of a place without pillars, we planned for attractive product displays with meticulous soft indirect lighting, flat large display tables, glass cases, and wall display cases. A museum shop, hosting nearly two million visitors per year, handles 3,000 items, including catalogs, books, cards, replica of exhibits, clothing, and stationary. When visitors reach the second floor while browsing books as they advance the slope, they can enjoy the view of the whole shop from there. At the opening of the exhibition, which used to have natural light as the exhibition lighting (currently closed with an iron door), there have been seven light walls installed.  The motif of these light walls comes from the mosaic wall of the reception room of this building which is also an important cultural asset. We have taken over this impressive mosaic pattern made with craftsmanship beyond the era and made it the visual identity of the new shop.  This is the Museum Shop of the Tokyo National Museum, the museum which develops into the future while inheriting the past.
